The Story - Tanzania Peaberry

Tanzanian Peabeery is a limited time offering, which will be available for the month of December.

Nestled in the rugged hills of southwestern Tanzania, the Mbozi region is renowned for its rich coffee-growing heritage, and the Mbozi Estate is one of the area’s finest examples of high-altitude cultivation. Grower Joseph Mella established the estate in 1995, planting a mix of Bourbon and Kent varietals that thrive at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. This high-altitude setting, paired with the region’s fertile volcanic soil and mild climate, provides ideal conditions for producing coffee with remarkable depth and complexity.

The estate’s focus on sustainability and quality is evident in every step of production. Coffee cherries are carefully hand-harvested at peak ripeness, then delivered to an on-site pulping unit, where they undergo meticulous sorting. The cherries are handpicked, ensuring only the finest, fully ripe fruit is processed. After sorting, the cherries are laid out to dry on raised beds, where they are turned frequently for up to 21 days to ensure even drying. This careful process results in clean, bright beans that fully express the unique terroir of the Mbozi region.

Mbozi Estate’s peaberry coffee is a true standout, known for its syrupy body and balanced brightness. The peaberry beans—smaller and rounder than regular coffee beans—are prized for their concentrated flavor. When roasted, the result is a cup with a smooth, full-bodied profile, accented by notes of chocolate, caramel, and subtle fruit undertones. The lively acidity adds a refreshing contrast to the rich sweetness, creating a harmonious balance that coffee enthusiasts appreciate. With hints of red fruit and a touch of spice, this coffee offers a layered, multifaceted tasting experience that will appeal to both connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.

Mbozi Estate’s coffee is a true expression of Tanzanian craftsmanship, shaped by the dedication of its smallholder farmers and the unique environmental conditions of the region. Every sip tells the story of Tanzania’s burgeoning specialty coffee scene, where tradition and innovation meet to create a coffee that’s as vibrant and distinctive as the land from which it springs.
